The Loop Recalls ‘The Night Disco Died’

7/13/1979 -- The White Sox scoreboard message goes unheeded as thousands of spectators engulf the field during an anti-disco demonstration that caused the second game of a double-header to be called off. Detroit won the opener 4-1. UPI photo by Hank DeGeorge.(demolition,Comiskey park, baseball pro,Chicago)

37 years ago, a fresh-faced Steve Dahl fastened his helmet and walked onto the in-field of Comiskey Park between a double-header of an evening against the Detroit Tigers. 50,000 people were waiting for him.  .98 cents got you through the gate, nodding to our call letters, 97.9 FM. The records cost extra but the explosions were free. Nothing brings a community together like fire, right? Dahl exploded the collected records before fans started tossing theirs onto the field like flying-discs. Then came the crowd, a riot, and a forfeited White Sox game. The rest is history.

Teenagers took back the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll they cherished so dearly. And it was all thanks to the greatest promotional stunt in the history of FM radio. The Loop remembers, The Disco Demolition.
