Tom O'Toole
TOToole@wlup.com

Tom O'Toole, aka "Tomo." Ok, so everybody always asks how I got my nickname. Garry Meier, (Yes, THAT Garry Meier!) use to joke about how hard it was to type my name. With all the shift keys and apostrophes in O’Toole, he always complained it was a freaking pain to type Tom O'Toole, so Garry just shortened it to Tomo. It stuck!

"Tomo" has been around since day one of The Loop! In fact he was the first Morning Jock on The Loop when we signed on in the spring of 1977. He pushed the very first button to start the turntable (Remember those? Even if you do, don't admit it!) to play the very first song on The Loop. What was it? (He’s not giving up the secret right here.) Send Tom an email HERE and he'll send you the answer. Then you can stump all the drunks in the bar the next time the trivia question comes up "What was the very first song ever played on 97.9 The Loop?"

With a long heritage of playing great rock as part of the "Original"
Loop Crew that included Bill Evans, Patty Haze, Dave Logan and Les
Tracey, Tom continues to "Rock Chicago" on weekends and often pops in
during the week to sit in for Erin, Zakk, and Byrd.

Tomo has some great stories about hanging out in downtown hotels after
concerts until the sun came up with rock stars like Brian May of Queen,
Keith Emerson of ELP, Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead, Joe Perry,
Steven Tyler and David Lee Roth. (Trust us, Tomo's stories from rehab
are not nearly as exciting!)

Tomo played the World Premiere of the Boston album, Don't Look Back, on The Loop; He also interviewed Superstars like Tom Petty and bands like Heart. He also say he "thinks he remembers" driving in major runs during a Charity softball game against Journey. (Hey, it was a hot day and we needed to stay hydrated and it wasn’t water that was in the cooler!)
