It looks like that on-again, off-again Freddie Mercury biopic is on again. A big name new writer has been brought on board—Anthony McCarten, who wrote and produced 2014’s “The Theory of Everything”, the film about physicist Stephen Hawking.
Director Dexter Fletcher quit the project in 2014 over the usual “creative differences” with the producers who included surviving Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor.
This is the project that Sacha Baron Cohen quit in 2013, who was not only slated to play Mercury, but write the film. Cohen wanted a realistic view of Mercury while the producers where looking for a more sanitized look at his life. And may felt Cohen’s involvement would have been a distraction.
