There was a big surprise at Chicago Cubs’ G.M. Theo Epstein’s “Foundation To Be Named Later” benefit at Metro last night-a full set from Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder with lots of on-stage celebrity cameos. Everyone saw Vedder at the Cubs game on Friday, but this came out of left field for guests at the event.
The foundation looks to “improve the world through education, leadership, and the healthy development of youth and families.”
Epstein joined Vedder on stage and performed “Better Man”, “Corduroy”, “Hard Sun”, “I Got You”, the old Split Enz song, “The Kids Are Alright” by The Who, and, of course, “All The Way”.
Later, Smashing Pumpkins, former Yankee and jazz guitarist Bernie Williams, Cubs Manager Joe Maddon and several players teamed up with Epstein and Vedder for Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World”.
Those in attendence included Liz Phair, and sportswriter Pete Gammons.
