James Hetfield…this is your life.
At a recent visit to the offices of the German tabloid newspaper Bild, the Metallica frontman was shown a few items of memorabilia from the band’s early days and asked for his comments. Hetfield was shown…:
…the 1982 Metal Massacre compilation album, which featured “Hit the Lights,” the first Metallica song released on vinyl. He points out that on the first pressing, the band’s name is misspelled with two “t”s.
…a handbill for Metallica’s first two shows, which he recalls that he designed, because he’d taken “three years of drafting.”
…a photo of himself that he recalls was used on the cover of Rip magazine with the cringe-worthy headline “The Mighty Het Speaks.”
…a photo of the band’s late bassist Cliff Burton, which prompts Hetfield to recall the show at which he and Lars Ulrich first saw Burton play with the band Trauma and “knew he had to be in the band. Yes, we miss him a lot. He’s a brother.”
