Online trolling across America – There’s a map for that

The new issue of Wired maps internet trolling, as collected and analyzed through a partnership with online commenting platform Disqus. (It’s worth noting that Facebook and Twitter comments are not included in this overview, which could dramatically change the results.)

Among the learnings:

  • The most toxic time of day for online trolling is 3 am (our parents were right; nothing good happens after midnight).
  • Park Forest, IL has been labeled the “most toxic city” in America because of its comments (though the report says the comments are almost entirely from the same two commenters).
  • New Hampshire is the “least toxic” state in America.
  • 8.2% of comments from Illinois are considered hostile.
  • Indiana and Wisconsin are mellower than Illinois, coming in at 6.5% and 6.6% respectively.
