An E. coli outbreak that stretches across 13 states may be tied to a bad batch of romaine lettuce. As of this writing, five people have been hospitalized and two people (including one in Canada) have died because of the outbreak. The CDC isn’t saying for certain that the E. coli comes from romaine lettuce, although Canadian health officials say it’s the cause of their outbreak.
Only one Illinois case has been confirmed, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Consumer Reports says stay away from romaine lettuce until the exact cause is confirmed. People at high risk for E. coli dangers include kids, the elderly and anyone with a weakened immune system.
