Sir Paul’s in town tonight and tomorrow, and one has to assume the 75-year-old legend will soon reach a point when he won’t want to tour anymore. As he gets ready to bust out a setlist that spans his work from the Beatles forward, I thought I’d offer up some of my favorites from his post-Beatles days.
Maybe I’m Amazed (McCartney)
Maybe one of the greatest love songs ever.
Letting Go (Venus and Mars)
Bluesy, with cool horns
To You (Back to the Egg)
Wings’ last album had some late-70s new wave influences, particularly on this one.
Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five (Band on the Run)
Possibly my favorite non-Beatles McCartney song.
Only Mama Knows (Memory Almost Full)
This 21st century Grammy-nominated song is a reminder that McCartney still understands how to rock.
Magneto and Titanium Man (Venus and Mars)
Hooray for Marvel Comics! Dozens of modern indie artists can trace a path back to this song.
Jet (Band on the Run)
I thought the major was a lady suffragette… classic power pop.
The World Tonight (Flaming Pie)
McCartney only released one single from Flaming Pie, and this was it.
Sing the Changes (Electric Arguments)
The Fireman, McCartney’s experimental project with Youth, largely flew under the radar. This may be the most accessible song from the last album, released in 2008.
