With Loopfest 2018 on the way, it seemed like a good time to bust out some Skynyrd trivia…
1. Ronnie Van Zant originally wanted to be a baseball player. Apparently he was a kickass outfielder with a great arm and solid batting average.
2. The band got its name from the gym coach who suspended Gary Rossington for wearing his hair too long. His name? Leonard Skinner. (Rejected names include My Backyard, One Percent and The Noble Five.)
3. “Gimme Back My Bullets” was about the bullets given to albums in music reviews. The band had to stop playing the song live because fans kept throwing real bullets on stage.
4. The seventh time was the charm to get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They were finally inducted in 2006.
5. The cover for their Street Survivors album showed the band engulfed in flames. The devastating Skynyrd plane crash happened mere days after the album came out, leading MCA Records to replace the cover with a the band against a simple, non-fiery background.
