‘Escape From New York’ remake in the works

Hollywood just can’t stop remaking classic movies; now you can add Escape From New York to the list.

I saw the original in theaters in 1981, when I definitely wasn’t old enough to process a young Adrienne Barbeau.

Escape From New York was dystopian cinema long before The Hunger Games; my first exposure to the idea that society is just one bad decision away from becoming a total sh*t show. The cast was amazing: Kurt Russell (in an eyepatch), Isaac Hayes, Ernest Borgnine, Lee Van Cleef, Donald Pleasence and wrestler Ox Baker. And it had the greatest score ever, courtesy of John Carpenter.

I want to be pessimistic about a remake, but it will have John Carpenter’s blessing (he’ll serve as Executive Producer). Even better, Robert Rodriguez is on the short list to direct it. Between Grindhouse, Sin City and even Spy Kids, I think he’ll be able to nail the tone and feel of Carpenter’s universe. In the meantime, if you’ve never seen the original, I can’t recommend it enough. Some of it is dated (1981 was a long time ago), but it still hits all the right notes for me. Here’s the trailer:
